What Does it Mean to be Immaterial? Aquinas Lecture

Presented by Therese Scarpelli Cory, PhD, University of Notre Dame.

The philosophical debate about the existence of non-physical or immaterial substances is seemingly endless.  But it is not so easy to say what exactly it would mean for something to be "immaterial."  I propose a concept of immateriality, drawn from Aquinas's philosophy of mind. Light reception to follow. RSVP at www.dspt.edu/aquinas2018

The Question of Animality in Heidegger and Aquinas

DSPT hosts Chad Engelland, PhD, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, University of Dallas in Irving, Texas. To assess what is at stake in the Heidegger-Aquinas debate concerning human animality, the paper contemplates the significance of the human hand, which Aristotle memorably calls the tool of tools. The hand clearly belongs to the bodily dimension of us and is both anticipated by animal grasping and transfigured by the unlimited openness of the human spirit.

Guides for the Perplexed: Aquinas and al-Ghazali on the Moral Life

Marianne Farina, CSC, DSPT Professor of Philosophy and Theology, will explore the theological ethics of Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (1058-1111) and Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274). Grounded in their respective religious traditions, their virtue theories show us that dialectic processes in the search for truth, animate faith and foster justice.

DSPT Symposium on Evangelism
