Foundations of Buddhist Chaplaincy: A Japan-US Dialogue

The Institute of Buddhist Studies and the Center for Japanese Studies at U.C Berkeley are excited to announce this bilingual workshop, which brings together chaplaincy educators and working chaplains in Japan and the United States to reflect on how we connect Buddhist teachings with effective service. We will discuss the current state of chaplaincy in our respective countries, the practice of Buddhist chaplaincy on the ground, the training and education of Buddhist chaplains, as well as the role of chaplains in our changing world.

AAR Western Regional Conference

The 2018 Annual Conference for the Western Region of the American Academy of Religion will be held at the Institute of Buddhist Studies. This year's conference theme is Religion and Kindness. Mass Meditation: Practices and Discourses in Contemporary Global Buddhisms

The fourth annual graduate student symposium at the Institute of Buddhists Studies examines the popularity of meditation practices in contemporary global Buddhisms. Papers will present a range of scholarship from historical perspectives on the modern origins of a diversity of mindfulness practices; scientific studies of Buddhist practice and globalized Buddhist feedback loops; and comparative studies across traditions, between the secular and the sectarian, and the modern and the traditional.

IBS: Symposium on Shinran & Continental Philosophy

Sponsored by Ryukoku University and the IBS's Center for Contemporary Shin Buddhist Studies, this two-day symposium will offer an examination of the Shin Buddhist tradition in light of recent developments in continental philosophy and continental philosophy in light of Shin Buddhism. Particularly, it will feature an in-depth examination of key features in the thought of Shinran in reflection with the philosophies of such thinkers as Martin Heidegger and Emmanuel Levinas.

IBS: Ryukoku Lecture

Please join Institute for Buddhist Studies for our annual Ryukoku Lecture, which will be given by Dr. Eisho Nasu, professor of Shin Buddhist Studies in the Department of Shin Buddhist Studies at Ryukoku University, Ryukoku University, Kyoto. Both lectures are free and open to the public.
