Hosted in partnership with the Northern California Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Foundation, this annual service gathers local and national interfaith leaders around a theme in Dr. King’s life and work. This year’s theme is “Justice and Hope.”

Justice & Hope: The MLK2021 Virtual Celebration

The 2021 King & Faith Series featured three virtual programs to inspire contemplation of two primary concepts central to Dr. King's message, justice and hope. The King & Faith Colloquy featured NorcalMLK executive director, Aaron Grizzell, hosting two imminent theologians, the Rev. Valerie Miles-Tribble, associate professor of ministerial leadership and practical theology at Berkeley Theological Seminary, and the Rev. Dorsey Odell Blake, sr.

Madrasa-Midrasha | Assembly without Assembly: Sacred Gatherings in the Time of Covid

Please join Rabbi Yonatan Cohen and Dr. Ahmed Khater as we consider the challenges that the pandemic has posed to traditional forms of assembly and the way in which Muslim and Jewish religious leaders have helped to forge the possibility of assembly in a time of social distance.

Deena Aranoff, Director of the Richard S. Dinner Center for Jewish Studies, and Munir Jiwa, Director of the Center for Islamic Studies, will moderate.

The Importance of Interfaith Understanding

Our distinguished panel—led by Michael Pappas and which includes Mahjabeen Dhala, a religious motivational speaker, who is pursuing a doctorate at the Graduate Theological Union; the Rt. Reverend William Swing, president and founding trustee of the United Religions Initiative (URI), and Sam Berrin Shonkoff, Ph.D. assistant professor of Jewish studies at GTU—will discuss the connections among the the Abrahamic faiths, the unfortunate general lack of knowledge of the others' histories, cultures, and beliefs, and how increased understanding, tolerance, acceptance, respect, etc.
