Hate crimes based on sexual orientation account for 20% of all hate crimes reported to the FBI in recent years and violence against the transgender community continues at an appalling rate as well. We know that anti-gay religious voices contribute to creating a climate that allows these terrifying crimes to continue at high rates. Many faith leaders, however, are firm in our commitment that all people deserve to live in safety and freedom and that violence is never the appropriate response to our differences.

Professor Laurel Schneider will be speaking for the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies in Religion and Ministry’s Georgia Harkness lecture on Thursday, October 13th. 

Dr. Schneider will be doing a roundtable with WSR to discuss her work in the Dinner Boardroom at 10am on Friday, October 14th.

The theme of this year’s summit is Creating Space for Social Justice. Securing human dignity for others and ourselves is not just a laudable goal, but a necessary part of our expression of faith. Our faith communities must be educated and inspired to embrace the inclusion and affirmation of our transgender, queer, intersex, transsexual and gender non-conforming members. This is the rallying call for the CLGS Transgender Religious Leaders Summit 2012.

Susannah Cornwall, Postdoctoral Research Associate with the Lincoln Theological Institute at the University of Manchester, will deliver this year's Harkness Lecture. Her current research focuses on interactions between intersex and faith identity via empirical research with intersex Christians in Britain, and the implications for theological policy, pastoral care and healthcare chaplaincy.
